Project Name: SCAI – Sport, Active Citizenship and Integration

Summary: The project SCAI – Sport, Active Citizenship and Integration aims to empower adult learners from civil society organizations in Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia, and the Czech Republic through a dedicated workshop held in Turin, Italy. The core mission is to foster active European citizenship and promote social inclusion by using sport as a powerful, non-formal educational tool. Over the course of a week, 20 participants will engage in interactive training, seminars, cultural exchange activities, and structured sports sessions designed to break social and cultural barriers. The workshop emphasizes the development of democratic values, intercultural dialogue, and practical skills to address exclusion and inequality. Participants will strengthen their capacity to support disadvantaged communities, enhance foreign language and communication skills, and connect with peers across Europe to build enduring partnerships. The workshop delivers both individual learning outcomes and transnational cooperation impact, aligned with the goals of the Lifelong Learning Programme.

Main Objectives:

  • To foster active European citizenship by empowering adult learners from civil society organizations in Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia, and the Czech Republic through meaningful participation and reflection on shared European values.
  • To promote sport as a tool for social inclusion, particularly for disadvantaged groups, highlighting its role in breaking cultural and linguistic barriers and encouraging participation in democratic life.
  • To strengthen the capacity of NGOs and their members by developing practical skills for working with marginalized populations, organizing inclusive activities, and transferring know-how across countries.
  • To encourage intercultural dialogue and build lasting partnerships between organizations from both old and new EU member states.

 

Key Activities:

  • Educational Seminars: Workshops on European citizenship, democratic participation, social empowerment of disadvantaged groups, and EU strategies against discrimination.
  • Interactive Group Sessions: Role-playing exercises, case studies, small group discussions, and experience-sharing among participants from different cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Sport-Based Inclusion Activities: Daily sport sessions designed to foster teamwork, mutual understanding, and integration. Mixed teams ensure diversity in nationality, gender, and background.
  • Cultural Visits and Exchange: Guided excursions in Turin to cultural landmarks and community sport facilities, enriching participants' understanding of Italian culture and lifestyle.
  • Presentations & Networking: Country-specific presentations by participants, building bridges between EU member states and encouraging long-term collaboration.
  • Reflective Learning Spaces: Open discussions on topics such as non-discrimination, civil society roles, migration, human dignity, and European values.

Participating Organizations:

  • Host Organization: Comitato Territoriale UISP Ciriè Settimo Chivasso – Italy Lead coordinator and workshop organizer. Experienced in sport-based inclusion, adult training, and transnational collaboration.
  • Partner Organization: Courage Foundation – Bulgaria Working with disadvantaged groups, including Roma communities and youth in difficult social conditions.
  • Partner Organization: Scoala Arte e Meserii – Romania Specialized in education and support for handicapped children and marginalized groups.
  • Partner Organization: Rural Association Akniste – Latvia Promoting local development, adult learning and community-based initiatives in rural areas.
  • Partner Organization: EGEE Association – Czech Republic Focused on civic engagement, volunteer work, and empowerment of vulnerable populations.

 

Implementation Period: The workshop is conduct over a total duration of 7 days, broken down as follows:

  • Arrival Day: March 30, 2010
  • Training Days: March 31 – April 5, 2010 (5 full learning days)
  • Departure Day: April 6, 2010

The workshop activities include a combination of training, discussions, sport and cultural activities. All core learning sessions are occur during the 5 dedicated training days.

Legacy & Impact: The SCAI project fosters long-term effects at individual, organizational, and European levels.

  • Personal Growth: Participants develop skills in intercultural communication, active citizenship, and working with disadvantaged groups. These competencies support both personal and professional development within their communities.
  • Organizational Empowerment: Partner NGOs enhance their capacity to design and deliver inclusive activities. New transnational connections lay the groundwork for future collaborative initiatives.
  • European Added Value: The workshop contributes to building a shared understanding of European identity and democratic values. Knowledge and best practices are exchanged across borders, promoting cohesion among EU member states.
  • Dissemination and Replication: Outputs (website, CD-ROM, brochure, TV coverage) ensure wide visibility beyond direct participants. The methodology and topics are replicable in future projects and workshops, enabling a multiplying effect within civil society networks.
