According to statistics compiled by the World Health Organization in 2013, about one in three women has been subjected to violence of some kind in their lifetime, especially physical and sexual violence. Statistics which, unfortunately, do not seem to be decreasing at all. A 2014 survey by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights -FRA- revealed that, by interviewing 42,000 women from the 28 Member States of the European Union, violence against women - and in particular gender-based violence disproportionately affects women - constitutes a violation of human rights as well as a very serious public health problem.
As part of the survey, women were interviewed about their experiences of physical, sexual and psychological violence, including episodes of intimate partner violence, as well as about sexual harassment and stalking behaviors and the role of new technologies in experiences of abuse experienced by women. From the data emerging from these researches, the WINGS project lays its foundations, to which the UISP Ciriè Settimo Chivasso Territorial Committee adheres as a partner and of which a kick off meeting was held starting from 11 February 2020 in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.
WINGS has in fact set itself the objective of promoting and encouraging participation in this particular sporting discipline, targeting above all women and girls who are at risk of violence or who have been victims of it in their lifetime. The choice of judo was not accidental since the latter, like oriental disciplines in general, combine physical and mental well-being and which in this specific case helps to manage emotions and fear especially in cases of particular tension. Through sporting practice, knowledge and moral qualities are further developed, which are fundamental for helping the weakest subjects to become active members of their communities.
WINGS has also produced a Best Practices Manual and video material in order to design - and consequently implement - a study that will allow the collection of data and that will strengthen the cooperation network between the various partners participating in the project to implement awareness on this issue.
Project started in 2019 and finished in 2022
