SPORTIVA…MENTE: sport for all for the quality of life of people in the area of mental distress

Project cities: validation phase - Turin, Modena, Rome, Sassari; experimental phase -Taranto, Milan, Palermo, Genoa and Florence
Duration: 29th October 2009 – 28th April 2011 (18 months)
Financing: Ministry of Labour and Social Policy in the context of the law 383/2000 - F/2008

The integration of people with mental distress, intellectual-mental-physical and/or sensorial disability, is one of the fields in which Uisp has been working for several years, with different tools and methodologies and the football event "Crazy for football" is a positive and consolidated example.

One of the objectives that UISP aims with social promotion projects is to use these ministerial funds  as opportunities for innovation and the realization of local laboratories that enable advanced and qualified experimentations, reproducible on the territory and that can become an heritage for the whole association.

The project “SPORTIVA….MENTE” is therefore an opportunity to identify and scientifically validate a methodological model of intervention, already implemented by some territories, in the area of mental distress, but also the tool to enlarge the experimentation.

In the first project phase, that of validation, which saw the involvement of four cities (Turin, Modena, Rome and Sassari), the Scientific Committee has built the grid and the evaluation indicators of good practices, which specifically concerned the field of psycho-social rehabilitation. The sports offered were mainly team sports, high-impact re-socializing activities that allow patients to interact and represent a good "training for life", through the rules that characterize them,

This phase was therefore the aim to scientifically "test" the local interventions considered of high quality, in order to create an intervention methodology through a drafting of guidelines allowing all territories to implement interventions of social promotion.

This first phase assessment has led to identify other cities - Palermo, in collaboration with Enna and Ragusa, Milan, in collaboration with Como, Taranto, in collaboration with Brindisi and Lecce, Genoa and Florence - where to start experimental laboratories of good practices to reproduce initiatives and actions on the territory, supported by scientific basis.

The assessment of this process has allowed us to present the effectiveness of the methodology model proposed with the project and to design the overall framework of good practices, which have been collected and issued in the project guide.
