On Friday 28 October, in Bologna starting at 9.00 AM, Uisp will present the results of SPFF-Sport in Prison, a plan for the future, a project that aims to develop good practices, using sport in prison as a channel to connect with other sectors of society. Begun in January 2020 and nearing its end, this initiative is funded by the EC Erasmus Plus program and coordinated by the De Rode Antraciet association (Belgium), involving Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia and the Netherlands.

The SPFF project makes use of previous scientific studies, which have demonstrated the benefits of sports programs within the prison, both for the detainees and for the institution itself and for society. "We must reclaim the right of detainees to play sports, not only by virtue of the health benefits, but also for the rehabilitation and social recovery value of sport, which is now recognized also in Italy", explains Loredana Barra, head of Uisp Educational and Inclusion Policies. "The pandemic has stopped many activities, but now we are restarting and we have stable collaborations with about 27 prisons. In the education sector there is talk of an 'alliance to get out of error', which I believe reflects well the value of the projects that UISP has been carrying out in prisons for many years now".

On the other hand, the lack of a true connection between the inside and the outside of prisons was also proven. Therefore, during the development of this project, a toolkit was developed for the promotion of a good sports program and the related connection with the territory outside, facilitating collaboration between prisons, prisoners, prison administration staff, volunteers, sports organizations and social networks, sports associations and non-profit organizations. "This is a methodological guide, for people who wish to start working or already work in prison, to use sport as a bridge between the inside and the outside of the prison, helping them both to involve external associations and to support individuals. The guide illustrates how to involve partners, how to do needs analysis and presents the activities carried out in the various countries ", says Camilla de Concini, Italian coordinator of the project.

The conference on 28 October will therefore be an opportunity for comparison and contamination of knowledge between the institutions that deal with the detention and social recovery of prisoners, thanks to the sharing of the results of the project and the tools developed during its implementation. The local Uisp committees involved, Bologna and Florence, were in fact able to make use of the collaboration with various local authorities. The Uisp Firenze committee worked together with the Health Society, the Territorial Health Network - Soc Direction of Penitentiary Establishments and Suicidal Risk Prevention and the NCP Sollicciano and CC Gozzini Prison Houses. As for the Uisp Bologna territorial committee, the activities were supported by the USSM - Office of Social Service for Minors, by the Social Services of the Neighborhoods, by the SEST - Territorial Educational School Services, by the Juvenile Justice Center, IPM Pietro Siciliani of Bologna through the ASD (Amateur sports association) Semper Avanti and eight social cooperatives that manage various communities throughout the territory.

"It was very important to have the opportunity to take advantage of the experience of the various entities that collaborated in the implementation of the project - adds Daniela Conti, Head of Uisp Policies for Interculturality and Cooperation. In Bologna, the work focused above all on minors, who have had a sport experience, attending a Thai boxing course within an ASD affiliated with Uisp: a job focussed on the relationship between peers, as the course was attended by young people enrolled in the ASD together with the young people involved in the project. While in Florence we brought the AFA-Adapted Physical Activity methodology into the prison to include an often forgotten section of the prison population in sports activities: elderly people, sedentary, who may have a history of substance abuse behind them. This approach has also made it possible to have an impact in reducing the use of psychotropic drugs".

The meeting will be held in the Tassinari room of Palazzo d'Accursio and the proceedings, coordinated by Loredana Barra, will be opened at 9.30 AM by Roberta Li Calzi, Councilor for Sport and Budget of the Municipality of Bologna.

Following, the presentation of the project, by Daniela Conti and the speech by Elia De Caro, exponent of the Antigone association. After that, the territorial committees will present their activities: Emilio Lastrucci, Uisp Firenze, and Eros Cruccolini, Guarantor of the prisoners of Florence, and Cristina Angioni, Uisp Bologna, will intervene, together with the Guarantor of the prisoners of Bologna, Antonio Iannello and the director of the IPM of Bologna, Alfonso Paggiarino. Camilla de Concini will then illustrate the tools that SPFF uses in practice and, after a space dedicated to interventions and questions, Tiziano Pesce, Uisp National President, will conclude.
