Rewins 2.0, meeting in Amsterdam for the partners of the European project

The project aims to involve migrant women and asylum seekers in the communities of arrival, through the practice of team sports

The first in-person meeting between the partners of the European Rewins 2.0 project took place in Amsterdam on Thursday 15 February. The leader is the FARE-Football Against Racism in Europe network with Uisp, Ramasa (Spain), Organization Earth (Greece) and Girl Power (Denmark), as partners of the project. Rewins 2.0-REfugee Women Inclusion through individual and team Sports is a two-year pilot project focused on promoting the inclusion of refugee women in different team and individual sports, through the creation of sports teams together with local women and the mentoring of coaches. The project follows in the footsteps of the previous Rewins, created between 2019 and 2020.

In the context of using sport as a tool for refugee integration, Rewins 2.0 addresses two main issues: the need to create training structures adaptable for the inclusion of refugee women in different team and individual sports (football, dance, volleyball, swimming, athletics, etc.); the need to offer a personalized online mentoring program for coaches/trainers working with refugees.

The project will develop in the first phase through a needs analysis and then proceed with the sharing of knowledge and experiences, diffusion and finally communication and dissemination of the results achieved. During these phases Rewins 2.0 will pursue the aim of directly engaging refugees and host communities within the EU to promote a Europe-wide approach, increasing the potential for European host communities to engage and integrate more effectively.

There are three specific steps to support the achievement of this objective: identification of good practices and development of training activities that facilitate the inclusion of refugee women in various sports, creation of mixed teams of refugees and people from the area involved who promote sport as space to bring together people from different backgrounds. In this journey, it is vitally important to create the conditions to foster European-wide exchange of knowledge and mentorship to strengthen the capacities of coaches and sports workers working with refugees.

During the meeting, a preliminary analysis of the research carried out during the first phase of the project was presented. In fact, all partners had been involved in the collection of questionnaires submitted to refugees and migrants on their needs relating to the practice of sport and the obstacles encountered in it. Uisp collected responses from different parts of the country, involving the local committees involved in activities with refugees and asylum seekers, as well as migrants in general. The analysis of the data collected was assigned to the project to the Greek organization Organization Earth and was integrated with the contributions of the partners, before proceeding with its public dissemination. The next phase will see Uisp involved in disseminating the contents of the project at a national level and, in collaboration with the FARE network, throughout the continent.

The final conference is expected to be held in the autumn in which the results will be presented, enriched by the experience that each partner will be able to build in their own territories. "The meeting was important because it allowed actors who operate in the same field to meet again - says Raffaella Chiodo Karpinsky, who took part in the meeting for Uisp - and who deal with the growing difficulties of those arriving in the countries involved from the project to request asylum. There are many common characteristics in terms of needs identified by sports operators. As emerged from the testimonies of the association which, through football, operates near Barcelona for the inclusion of refugee women, or from the experience shared by the Afghan women of the Girl Power association in trying to involve women seeking asylum in participating in sporting activities to include them in society.

Together with Afghan women we particularly shared the need to recognize the importance of sport as a language for dealing with trauma. In fact, women asylum seekers and migrants in general have dramatic experiences behind them that make their involvement more difficult. There is always the risk of making gestures or using terms that, even involuntarily, can push them away. This is why we promote projects like Rewins 2.0 and others in which Uisp is involved: to develop together with the various partners the most effective practices and skills to do our job well". (Raffaella Chiodo Karpinsky)
